Is the City cancelling Art in the Park or other Fall 2021 events due to COVID-19 concerns?

This is a rumor we've been hearing around town in recent weeks, so we wanted to add and address it hear. The City is NOT considering cancelling any upcoming events due to COVID-19. The City is actually partnering with the Huachuca Art Association to host a Vineyards in the Park event on the first day of Art in the Park on Saturday, Oct. 2. We're also looking forward to the return of Oktoberfest, National Night Out, and the Veterans Day Parade, to name a few of our favorite fall events. Learn more in our fall issue of Vistas

Why don't people get cited and fined for removing shopping carts from business property ?

MIKLRAY asked over 1 year ago

Under certain circumstances individuals may be charged criminally for removing shopping carts, but the Sierra Vista Police Department has recently had success approaching this problem another way. The Sierra Vista Police Department has been educating and encouraging local stores to implement technology that ensures the carts lock up when someone attempts to take them off the store’s property. As a result of these efforts, Fry’s Food and Drug is currently in the process of switching out all their carts with models that prevent removal. We hope other local stores will follow suit soon!

Are plastic shopping bags Sierra vista's official flower

MIKLRAY asked over 1 year ago

Sierra Vista does not have an official flower. :)

Spring in southeast Arizona is particularly windy and trash becomes caught in the plants, borrow pits, and against buildings.  We recognize that some loose trash is the result of things simply “getting away” from peoples’ hands on a windy day, while some is the result of improperly bagged trash placed in bins, and items blowing out of business dumpsters, among other causes.  The City is actively addressing these causes, including promoting our “Adopt-an-Area” program, in which groups can commit to keeping trash picked up in a specified area within the City limits.

Please consider adopting an area and helping keep our City clean, and, when possible, choose reusable shopping totes instead of plastic bags to help reduce the amount of trash heading to the landfill or getting away on a windy day.

    Thank you!

How can we get a petition to ban all grocery plastic bags

MIKLRAY asked over 1 year ago

In 2016, the Arizona Legislature passed HB2131, which prohibits cities, towns, and counties from restricting a retailer’s ability to offer plastic bags to customers. This was upheld in 2017, which brought an end to Bisbee’s plastic bag ban. Any change in a Sierra Vista’s ability to ban plastic bags would first require a change at the state level through legislative action.  If you would like to start a ballot measure petition, contact the office of the Arizona Secretary of State.  A starting place is their website, https://azsos.gov/.

What can be done to the Fry’s parking lot, specifically the road between the parking lot and the store, to make it safer? Drivers don’t slow down, and many seem to think that they, not pedestrians, have the right of way.

Dkoltveit asked over 1 year ago

Since the Fry’s parking lot is private property and in compliance with City code, any safety concerns should be directed the store’s management for consideration. Traffic safety is an important concern to the City and we appreciate you bringing this to our attention as well. Learning about issues like this can help us identify and prioritize public service messaging to help influence driver behavior to improve safety.

Why aren't authorities interested in animals abuse in Sierra Vista? Seems neither law enforcement, nor animal control takes any of it very seriously.

Grumpy jarhead asked over 1 year ago

The Sierra Vista Police Department and the Nancy J. Brua Animal Care Center take all reports of animal abuse seriously. To report a case of possible animal abuse, please call the Nancy J. Brua Animal Care Center at (520) 458-4151 or, if it’s an emergency, call 911.

The City may not have the answer to this, but we are just curious as to why the big wheel on hwy 92 hasn't been turning for so long? TIA!

Brownd3max asked over 1 year ago

That wheel is owned by Cashway Mini-Warehouses. It has served as a local landmark and an attraction for the business for many years. We reached out to the business and were informed the wheel needs repairs to start running again. Currently the business has other maintenance needs that take priority, so there is no timeline for when the wheel may be up and running again.

Who do I need to contact about concerns regarding traffic light settings in Sierra Vista? I ride my bike daily and one of the traffic lights shows a green arrow for traffic to turn left AND the pedestrian light gives the indicator to proceed across the street at the same time. I have been close to being hit several times and I have also witnessed others having the same problem at the same intersection.

AZfamily asked over 1 year ago

    Hi AZfamily,

It depends whether the intersection is on a City street or on a state highway. State highways and associated traffic signals, like those along Highway 90 and Highway 92, are maintained by the Arizona Department of Transportation even if the traffic signal is within the City limits. Either way, we can help ensure your concern gets to the right place. What intersection are you referencing?

Are there any city employees dedicated to pick up litter on city streets ?

MIKLRAY asked over 1 year ago

Thanks for your question! No, the City does not have staff who are dedicated to picking up litter on City streets. We are grateful for participants in our Adopt a Street program, where groups and individuals volunteer to collect litter on segments of their choice.  If you're interested in adopting a street or area, check out our website for more information.

Who do I need to talk to regarding traffic safety?

Geo asked almost 2 years ago

It depends on your particular questions. SVPD Sgt. Brian Sebastian is a good place to start, especially of your question is related to enforcement. He can be reached at Brian.Sebastian@SierraVistaAZ.gov
