The original concept for the parking lot along St. Andrews Drive included in the Garden Canyon Linear Park Master Plan

After securing a grant from Arizona State Parks & Trails, the City of Sierra Vista is now constructing a paved parking lot along St. Andrews Drive at Garden Canyon Linear Park. The existing parking area will be closed from Monday, Jan. 11, until the project wraps up in mid-April.

This project represents the largest improvement made to the park since the parking lot along Cherokee Avenue was constructed, along with improvements at Kachina Trail and Calle Encina, in 2009.

The Garden Canyon Linear Park Master Plan (download here) was created in 2008 with the help of public input. The current phase under construction includes only the rectangular parking area. Other improvements, to include paving the adjacent loop, will be tackled in later phases. City staff will continue pursuing grants and other funding opportunities in the coming years to turn these planned improvements into reality.

The construction of a parking lot located along St. Andrews Drive at Garden Canyon Linear Park started Thursday, Jan. 7, and the existing unpaved parking area will be closed starting Monday, Jan. 11.

The closure will remain in effect for the duration of the project, which is expected to be completed in mid-April. The project schedule is subject to change based on weather conditions and other factors. During the closure, the project area will be restricted to construction personnel only.

Patrons may use the existing Garden Canyon Linear Park parking lot located along Cherokee Avenue to avoid the project area until the work is completed. Drivers traveling near the work zone are reminded to proceed with caution, slow down, and watch for personnel and equipment.

This project is being completed with the assistance of an Arizona State Parks & Trails grant of over $79,000. This includes a minimum 5.7 percent match from the City that may be covered by staff time and in-house resources contributed to the project. The grant covers about 90 percent of the project cost, with the remainder paid for by the City.

This project marks the most significant improvement to the park since the Cherokee parking lot was constructed along with improvements at Kachina Trail and Calle Encina in 2009. A master plan for the park was created in 2008 with the help of public input.
